Job Summary

SPAR Central Office, a division of The SPAR Group Ltd., is recruiting for Group Retail Food Safety Specialist to join our dynamic team.

Duties and Responsibilities

Purpose of the role
The purpose of this role is to provide compliance knowledge and guidance to SPAR stakeholders and position the SPAR Group as a food safety conscious organisation through delivering food safety policies that strengthen food safety culture in the retail business.

Key Performance Areas
Legislation & Regulatory Compliance
Educate relevant stakeholders on the importance of food safety compliance and their role in ensuring a compliance culture for the SPAR group
Conduct research and liaise with relevant authorities (legislators, industry bodies, auditors, etc.) to compile recommendations for the business and present to relevant stakeholders in order to facilitate understanding and application
Quality Assurance
Monitor the food safety audit system and analyse risks arising from business activities and formulate measures to address them.
Develop and recommend best food safety operating practice for SPAR retail.
Provide guidelines to retailers regarding food safety in order that they educate their direct suppliers.
Training & Development
Attend relevant government and industry training or workshops to maintain current legislation knowledge and impart this knowledge to the business.
Develop training material for use by retailers and retail operations teams
Host and present regional food handler training sessions for retailers
Administration & Reporting
Manage the food safety database
Compile management reports that will contribute to management’s informed decision making in order to protect the SPAR Group’s brand
Ensure payment of regional operation accounts.
Manage the training and traveling budgets
Stakeholder Relationships
Support and strengthen external stakeholder relationships e.g. relevant government departments and industry bodies such as CGCSA
Maintain relationships and communication with retailers and retail operations teams to guide and support compliance initiatives

Qualifications and Experience

Minimum requirements
Matric
A tertiary qualification with a food related specialisation (Food Science or Food Technology
Certification in ISO 22000 (PRPs, HACCP) is essential
At least 3-5 years’ experience in hospitality, retail or FMCG with specific focus on food safety
A minimum of 2-3 years’ experience in food safety training at retail
Knowledge of relevant food safety legislation is critical
Proficient in all MS Office applications
